Bún Bò Huế

Cơm Hến

  • Sam’s personal favorite and all-time breakfast dish. A unique rice salad made with fresh vegetables and tiny clams from the Perfume River.

    Cơm Hến is a delightful mix of textures, blending the tender clams with crunchy rice crackers, creating a distinct local flavor.

  • There is a mini island in Hue called Cồn Hến (Huế Dune). Once you cross the only bridge of the dune, there are plenty of places that you can stop for a bowl of this delicacy.

  • Our favorite lunch, hands down. Delicate rice paper rolls filled with grilled pork and fresh herbs, served with a very light fish-sauce based dipping sauce.

  • Flat rice ‘dumplings’ filled with seasoned shrimp and pork, steamed in banana leaves. A ‘cannot miss’ and Sam’s favorite “Huế cake”’!

Bún Thịt Nướng

  • Charcoal grilled pork with rice vermicelli, fresh herbs, and peanuts; a great light lunch or afternoon snack. Sam’s favorite place allows you to ditch the noodles and just get grilled port, herbs and peanuts – practically healthy.

  • Small, steamed rice cakes topped with minced shrimp and crispy pork skin, creating a delightful bite-sized treat. Goes well with all the other “Huế cakes”. My’s favorite “Huế cake”.

Bánh Canh

  • A thick noodle soup with various ingredients such as crab, shrimp, or pork. Cross-Vietnam classic done especially well in Huế

Bánh Lọc

  • Transparent, chewy dumplings filled with shrimp and pork, showcasing the culinary craftsmanship of Hue. These bite-sized delights are often enjoyed as a snack or appetizer.

Chào Bò

  • A rice porridge with tender beef, providing a nourishing and soothing option, especially popular for breakfast or as a light meal.

  • Name: Bún bò đập đá

    Address: 5 Nguyễn Công Trứ, Huế.

    Not available on half and fullmoon day. The restaurant is shared between two sisters so don’t be alarmed when you see different cook behind the steamy pot. The flavor should be the same but I do prefer the chubbier sister.

Bánh Ép

  • Originated from Thuan An Beach, ép means flattern and this dish is created from tapioca flour and topping that are flattened on a mould placed over a charcoal stove. The standard toppings are spring onions, herbs, thin coat of egg, meat. You can eat it directly with the dipping sauce or use it like a rice paper to roll with pickled young papaya and carrots.

Bánh Khoái

  • A crispy pancake filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts. There are many like it, but only one version is truly from Huế.

  • Name: Bánh khoái Thượng Tứ

    Address: 6 Đinh Tiên Hoàng, Huế.

Nem Lụi

  • Grilled pork skwered on a lemongrass stick and served with rice paper and fresh vegetables. Best served rolled up in rice paper and herbs. Comes with an especially pungent (but delicious) peanut and liver paste sauce.

Chè Huế

  • A sweet dessert soup that can feature a range of ingredients from mung beans, lotus seeds, and jelly. Not Sam’s favorite, but My will try one of each! You shouldn’t leave Huế till you try at least one.
